Welcome to the future. It might seem like something out of a sci-fi film, but virtual speed dating has become the new standard and the primary method for meeting people in these unprecedented times. So, you've signed up, but you're used to meeting people face-to-face. Do you still dress up? Do you still need to wear perfume/aftershave? Can they smell you through the computer?! These are all valid questions, and at Original Dating, we've already hosted numerous virtual speed dating events. We're here to share our insights and tips to give you a head start in the world of virtual dating.
If you had asked me at the beginning of the year about hosting virtual speed dating events, I would have dismissed the idea outright. But after hosting Original Dating's inaugural virtual speed dating event last week, I'm happy to admit I was wrong. The truth is, there's little difference between our in-person and online events. If anything, the virtual ones are slightly better. Don't believe me? Just check out the reviews from our previous virtual events.
Now that I've hosted several virtual speed dating events, I'm taking on the role of the self-proclaimed Virtual Speed Dating Guru—because, let's face it, there's no one else. So, here are some valuable tips to make the most of our virtual speed dating events.
Dress to impress
Virtual speed dating is still dating, and it's face-to-face. So, why change anything? Wear your favorite shirt or dress, just as you would for a normal date. And don't stop there—put on makeup, style your hair, and wear perfume if you like. One of the key takeaways from our events is a sense of normalcy, so if your favorite perfume makes you feel good, go for it. Most importantly, do what boosts your confidence.
If you're struggling to choose between your lucky shirts, opt for one with a simpler pattern. Block colors are less distracting and show up better on screen.
Set the scene
Remember the TV show 'Hot Property,' where contestants would snoop around potential suitors' homes? Unlike our in-person events, these virtual events offer a glimpse into your life. Choose an interesting backdrop in your home—a place where you feel comfortable or even close to the drinks cabinet. A blank living room wall or a nicely framed picture behind you will be more visually pleasing than a cluttered bedroom. Plus, you can cozy up on the sofa. The beauty of virtual speed dating is meeting people from the comfort of your own home, so make yourself comfortable.
Consider lighting—avoid being too dark or too bright, and make sure the light isn't directly behind you to minimize camera glare. It's crucial to be visible; after all, we wouldn't have you speed dating in the dark, would we?
All gear and no idea
Ah, technology—the bane of my existence. If there's one downside to virtual speed dating, it's technology. Thankfully, virtual speed dating works with most devices, including smartphones, laptops, or desktop computers. If you're using Wi-Fi, make sure you're close to the router and have a strong internet connection.
When using a laptop/desktop, ensure you have either a built-in camera and microphone or separate plug-in ones. This is essential because there's no typing messages in virtual speed dating. We'll provide all the necessary information with an easy-to-set-up link to the event, so make sure you're ready to go beforehand. Test your audio and microphone to ensure a smooth experience.
Luckily, I'm somewhat of a virtual speed dating expert (or so people say), and there's nothing technical you'll need to do besides signing into the event on time. Either myself or another host will handle all the technical aspects and run the event smoothly.
Upon arrival at the event, you'll be placed in a waiting room where the host will bring guests in one by one to sign in before starting the event. Please be patient during this time, and we'll get to you soon.
Get your head in the game
You've got four minutes—go! Wait, what do I say?! It's a different form of conversation, but it's the same, so don't worry. Introduce yourself, exchange individual numbers to kick things off, and let the conversation flow. I'd recommend having a list of questions prepared in advance to make the most of your four minutes.
Think of topics that are important to you but frame the questions in a more open and specific way. Instead of asking, "What do you like to do?" try, "What do you miss most about your weekends before quarantine?" or "What will you do on your first weekend after lockdown?" Address the elephant in the room—there's nothing wrong with discussing it. If anything, it's comforting to know you're not alone in all this.
Keep in mind that video chat may have a slight delay, so allow time for responses, and try to minimize interruptions—that's a top tip from the guru.
Stirred, not shaken
Finally, sit back, relax, and enjoy yourself. Pour a glass of wine or make yourself a Martini—stirred, as you won't be shaken after these tips. After all, this is a welcome break from social isolation and a great way to have fun while staying home and staying safe.
We launched our virtual events in response to social distancing to provide a means of connection during these unusual times. However, we never anticipated how successful they would be, and the response to our online events has been overwhelmingly positive. Every cloud has a silver lining, and the opportunity to connect people and foster future relationships during this time is a glimmer of hope that we've embraced wholeheartedly.
